HGA LEARN

BACKGROUND

National statistics indicate that a young person’s chances of finding employment are four times greater if they have gained work experience and improved further by having obtained a tertiary qualification. This is the impetus for our programme – the desire to address youth unemployment in our region.

HGA Learn creates opportunity for students undertaking a tertiary qualification in agriculture, to obtain the prerequisite in-service training needed for them to graduate. Thanks to the support of our commercial farming community and our partnership with Pannar Seed we placed our first students in 2018 and have been greatly encouraged by the success many have achieved once having obtained their qualifications.

SUCCESSES

  • 164 students enrolled to date (51 % female) from 24 different tertiary institutions.

  • 34 commercial farmers involved as host farmers.

  • Of our alumni, 70 % are currently employed, self-employed, completing another internship or studying further and of those employed, the majority have remained in the agricultural sector.

  • Several students have been offered full-time positions on the farms on which they obtained their training and have moved up the ranks to managerial roles on those farms. (Read about Walter Khumalo)
